Huston -we have a fever!

I am finally (almost) over my sickness, I "only" have this nasty sinus infection left, which makes every cough a living nightmare of drumming headache. My mom is now treating it with her laser gun (don't even ask but it has said to cure a sinus headache so I am willing to give it a try)! besides that, I have been lying on a magnetic madras (it's meant for increasing blood flow and relaxation). In my case it shows my body is very stressed so it should be interesting to see if my state improves. My mom is very much into all that and all though I have been very skeptical, I am at this point willing to try everything (within sanity) to help me on my healing journey.
Another peculiar thing has happened. I have had an above normal temperature which I recall is referred to as "having a temperature"! I haven't had a temperature while being sick, since early childhood! At one point it reached 37,7 (still with cold hands and feet though)
While I was sick, I didn't have much of an appetite, which is also something that is new to me! I'm normally more hungry when sick. The result of that of course, was that I ate less. I now pay for that. Today I woke up with a temperature reading of 35,6! Great, back from where I started :-/
I am a bit in two minds with this, on one hand, I want to listen to my body, eat when it wants and back off when it ask for that too, but if it is at the cost of my precious temperature, I am not sure how to go about this..
Maybe I need to force down more calories but then I wont really be listening to my body?

  1. Good to see you are feeling better. Interesting about the sinus infection. I have found that my temperature raised in waves, peaking a little higher each time.

I discovered that my main problem was overtraining due to undereating. I suffered from a low grade infection under my toenail for almost 1year!

I feel that if I was eating enough calories before, I never would have developed to infection or become overtrained.

Here is a great seminar presentation on overtraining that aligns with what I experienced: http://web.me.com/gregorywells/Wells_Presentations/Advanced_Exercise_Physiology/Entries/2008/4/7_Overtraining.html (kind of long but well worth the understanding)

I saw you post a question on 180 about returning to training. I found that I didnt desire to train again until I forced myself to go to the gym one day after a long layoff. I didnt push myself too hard and I found that it stimulated my desire to train again.

  2. Hi Riles!

Thank you for the feedback! You saying that your temperature raised in waves, gives me hope! thanks for sharing!
I believe I have had this sinus infection for years, because I am always sore when I touch my forehead, near my eyes and I can never sleep just breathing through my nose. I always have my mouth open. I too possibly got this during my years of over training due to under eating and never got rid of it. Every time I get a cold, I think it adds a little more to "the fire".

How long was your lay off period?

Thanks for the link! I will look at it as we speak ;-)

  3. Also, pulse rate is a good indicator to watch too.

I think you are right about "adding to the fire" with each cold/sickness. Eventually you just break down.

I took 3 months off after about 1.5 years of intense training. I never really took any time off during that period and stuck to my "diet" nearly all the time with very few breaks from it.

How has your sleep been? Deep and uninterrupted? I find that I am still sleeping lightly, waking multiple times in the night. It seems to be getting a little better though.

  4. Well my resting pulse has already gone up from 40bpm to now 60! Huge improvement! It also means I have no more dizzy spells!

I have basically done sports all my life (swimming, handball, ballet, rollerskating etc.) I got introduced to the gym at the age of 15, starting with cardio and other "girlie" exercises. Later moving on to weights and with competition in mind. Joined my first comp in 2003 and haven't take a break from training what-so-ever since! Not even the once-in-a-while 1 or 2 week break to fully recover. I just went full throttle, adding a little more training and a little less food, each year. No wonder my body suddenly just crashed..
Maybe 3 months off is not enough for me.. time will tell..

Regarding sleep, I sleep very lightly (earplugs helps with that) and I always wake at least once every night, to take a pee. I have trouble falling a sleep and no matter what time I go to bed, I always wake up when the sun rises. Mind you, I have always been like that, more or less, since I can remember. I just wish for once I could just go to bed, totally relaxed, exhausted and fall a sleep right away..

How have your sleep been earlier in your life?

    SvarSlet
  5. If I had to guess, I would say it may take you 3-6 months of time off to recover. Obviously, eating alot of good nutritious food will quicken that process.

When I was in my teens I played football and threw the shot-put, I would sleep so deeply that nothing would wake me up.
My sleeping patterns are almost identical to yours now. I normally sleep with the television on because it helps to calm my mind for some reason. If I don't, it seems like my mind races with thoughts. I also have to pee at least once a night(more often twice). I find this very annoying. Also, no matter how late I go to bed, I wake up at the same time in the morning. I then can sometimes fall back asleep after I eat breakfast but sometimes not. Sometimes I have success taking naps in the afternoon and that seems to help.

When you were doing your competitions did you have a coach or trainer that advised you on exercise and diet?

    SvarSlet
  6. Yeah.. That has been my thoughts as well. I make sure to get lots of nutritious food daily and most important in my case -enough!

Scary how similar my sleeping pattern is to yours! I also wake up at the same time and can more often fall back asleep AFTER I eat breakfast?! Maybe it's some kind of starving signal? I also get up twice more often than once. I sometimes get sleepy in the afternoon but I am to "scared" to act on it because I know it will prevent me from getting tired at bedtime.
Interesting about your mind races with thoughts, this is exactly what my head feels like when trying to go to sleep! I watch TV in bed to calm my mind.
I wonder what made your sleep pattern switch from your football years... Mind you, I have always been a light sleeper (even as a baby) but it has definitely become worse during my adult life. Do we worry too much, is that the answer? Or something else?

Yes, in the beginning I had a coach who put me through my first two comps. She managed my diet and training the first year. After that I kinda did my own research and tried out what worked for my body. I still listened to a few knowledgeable people during competition time but other than that, I was on my own. Geezzz.. I have put my body through some rough times! At my last comp I nearly fainted on stage (I actually had to walk off)! When coming off, I suddenly couldn't feel my legs. Very scary to think back on.

  7. That is scary seeing how similar our sleep patterns are. I don't really see myself as a worrier and am generally very "go with the flow". It is funny, last night was one of the worst times I have had trying to fall asleep :) very annoying!

I can't believe you almost fainted! That is frightening. I used to get light headed when standing up quickly when I wasn't eating enough. I think my blood volume was low due to not enough carbs and sodium.

Another weird symptom I have is not sweating very much, which I suppose is not a horrible thing but doesn't seem quite right.

  8. My internet connection has sucked ass the past 2 days! LOL! Haven't been able to log on.

Same night as yours, I was up not twice but three times! So amen to the annoying part ;-)

I have been the same up until just recently. For years I have been getting dizzy from standing up too quick but RRARF definitely took care of that. Like you, I also think mine was due to low carb/low calories and low sodium.

OMG I have this "problem" too! It takes a lot for me to sweat! -Mind you, very hard cardio will make me break a sweat, but normal weights does not.

Btw, thanks for the link! I knew about most but some of the info has been a really informative!

  9. Sheila,
I have been reading more Peat, and you may have estrogen dominance issues, which can be resolved with progesterone:

"All female problems including infertility, miscarriage, fibrocystic breast disease, ovarian fibroids, cystic ovaries, endometriosis, PMS and menopausal symptoms are usually caused or aggravated by hypothyroidism coupled with estrogen dominance (estrogen unopposed by progesterone). This can occur even with a normal estrogen level if progesterone is low or with normal progesterone if the estrogen is high. What is the thyroid-estrogen connection? Estrogen inhibits thyroid secretion. Progesterone stimulates it. Progesterone is made in the body from LDL cholesterol if there is adequate thyroid hormone and certain enzymes."

tarpel posted a link to Lita Lee's site recentlyn 180, good summary of thyroid issues, and pro-thyroid diet, definitely worth the read:

  10. I should add i know you haven't posted about the quoted problems, but sounds like estrogen can be a real issues in hypothyroidism/women :)

  11. Hi Undertow!

Thank you for your comment! I was aware that Progesterone had some effect in keeping a healthy metabolism but I didn't know exactly WHAT its job was -Estrogen inhibits thyroid secretion! That's new to me and would make sense regarding my issues. if that really is my problem, I guess my thyroid wont work properly before the Estrogen dominance is taken care of..
I started reading about Progesterone over a year ago. I had the same suspicion. I definitely feel there is some estrogen dominance going on. I actually ordered some Natural Progesterone Cream on that note back then, but I have been too scared to actually go through with it as I have read many stories about women who had terrible side effects. Since I haven't gotten my Progesterone levels checked (don't even know if that is possible?) I'm afraid I might do more harm than good?
Do you know what Peat recommends? Progesterone cream or actual medicine?

Thank you for the link! I will read it right now! :-)

  12. My daughter (Annabel) suffered from schizophrenia for 5 years. I had no idea what was happening and didn’t know where to turn for help. It was hard then because I really didn’t understand the symptoms earlier until she was diagnosed. There was a time she decided to get away from everyone, I was not excluded. I had to sit and cry almost every day because I felt helpless as a single mother (she is all I have got). The anguish I went through taking care of her alone is beyond explanation because there was no support whatsoever from the dad or family members. I fought for proper medical care and humane treatment; I did everything within my reach to get her cured but all to no avail. Countless different medications was prescribed (Zyprexa, fluphenazine, Risperdal, quetiapine, etc.) that she was taking but all we could get was myriad of side effects such as rigidity, drowsiness, dizziness, tremors and restlessness which tends to worsen the already damaged situation. Frustration was the order of the day. I wrote a couple of messages to Ontario Mental Health Foundation for help because watching my daughter go through such was devastating. It was at this foundation someone shared a testimony about DR James herba mix medicine, how effective it is and how she went through the most difficult times of her life trying to help her mom fight Schizophrenia. Being that I was already at the verge of giving up because I just couldn't imagine waking up every morning to fight the same demons that left me so tired the night before. I had to contact the doctor,on his email  (drjamesherbalmix@gmail.com)  from our conversations; I was relieved and convinced that the result is going to be positive because I was made to contact people with worse cases. Today, the awful situation of my daughter has gone by. Her happy life is back. She is now a schizophrenia survivor and I am glad because my daily routine activities can now kick off without obstructions. Don't let Schizophrenia hinder you from living a desired life and also, never allow anyone to decide for you especially when they don't know what you have to go through to get to where you are. I was almost discouraged by the doctor but then, I remembered that: I have to shield my daughter’s destiny with courage, faith and perseverance because she is not in her right state of mind and that the bravery and freedom from fear is found in the ‘doing’. Her life is now a testimony. After my daughter got cured, from the herbal mix medicine Dr James prepared and sent to me, she said, Mom “I just thought, ‘Well, I’m a weirdo, I’ll never be normal, then I said, my daughter, life itself is a misery and we get stronger in the places we have been broken. Thanks to you Dr. James  for your excellent counseling, no more psychotic symptoms for the past 3 years and 4 months now.
